Domingo H. Casadei, Argentina

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1945. Domingo, as everybody calls him, received his medical degree in 1969, graduated with an honor from the School of Medicine of Buenos Aires University. He specialized in Internal Medicine and Nephrology in Buenos Aires. Very early in his career, moved forward to the increased incidence of kidney failure and the rising success of kidney transplantation, he decided to found the Institute of Nephrology of Buenos Aires; a private institution dedicated to perform kidney transplants. This Institute quickly achieved an important national and international reputation, not only for performing a large number of annual kidney transplants, but also for being the first to incorporate novel therapies such as the administration of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) for the treatment of humoral acute rejection. Along his career, he trained more than 600 medical professionals and fellows in the transplant area and performed more than 3,500 kidney transplants and 350 kidney-pancreas transplants. In 2017 he founded the Institute of Transplantation and High Complexity (ITAC), an institution where not only kidney and renal pancreatic transplants are performed, but also liver and bone marrow transplants. He was President of the Argentine Transplant Society (SAT) and of the Latin American and Caribbean Transplant Society (STALYC). In 2002, he chaired the World Transplant Congress held in Miami, USA. At the same year, he created the “Fundación Argentina de Trasplante de Organos y Tejidos, Tercer Milenio” a non-profit entity that aims to collaborate in the training of young professionals dedicated to the area of organ transplantation and help transplant patients in their post-transplant treatment and re-insertion in working activities, among other actions. He helped in the development of public transplant services from provinces of Tucumán, Mendoza and Formosa. Since 2009, and uninterruptedly, it has organized Annual International Symposiums in Immunopathology in Renal Transplantation. He received several awards, such as Medicine Leaders Award in 2018 for pancreatic renal transplant and in 2019 Special Award from the Latin American and Caribbean Transplant Society in recognition of the brilliant and generous career in favor of transplant medicine and surgery in Latin America
